We’re currently in a pandemic and self-care right now is very important. Self-care is what keeps us from being couch potatoes. Staying healthy while trying to live a normal life is hard. Stress during a pandemic can cause fear and worry about your own health, changes in sleep or eating patterns, difficulty concentrating, or maybe even worsening of mental health problems but, there are ways to prevent that. Such as, eat regularly, prioritize your sleep, keep moving whether it’s walking, running, or riding a bicycle. Writing in a journal can also help. All in all, It’s very important to try and keep good self-care, especially during a pandemic.  

I selected a few people to interview about the importance of self care during this pandemic. I asked them: 

-How do you take care of yourself during this pandemic?

-Why is self-care important to you?

I first interviewed a David Anderson 7th and 8th grade english teacher, Mrs. Beech. I first asked, How do you take care of yourself during this pandemic?  ” She said, “I like to exercise and read; both of these are crucial to my mental health. Going on walks helps me clear my head and get some fresh air. Music has also become a form of self-care for me; when I need to zone out or refocus, then I listen to music.” I then asked her, Why is self-care important to you? ” She said, “Self-care is important all the time. What’s that saying…you can’t pour from an empty cup! We need to prioritize our mental and physical health before we can help others or accomplish goals.” Which I think is so important if you want to have good self-care. She then said, “During this pandemic, our lives have been completely flipped upside down. We can’t do what we usually do, so we must find new activities that fill our cup and keep us happy.”

Next, I interviewed a David Anderson 8th grade remote learner, Alissa Greathouse.  I asked her the same questions. How do you take care of yourself during this pandemic? She said, “I have been eating better and I got a Wii to have fun with while also exercising.” I think that’s a great way to stay active while having fun. I then asked, why is self-care important to you? She said, “it is important to me because if you’re healthy, you feel good. Feeling good and being in a good mood can really help your confidence level.” 

Finally, I interviewed a David Anderson 8th grade, in-class learner, Gretchen Miller. I also asked her the same questions. How do you take care of yourself during this pandemic? She said, “During this pandemic, I’ve read a lot. It keeps me at peace and is a nice way to escape from all of the chaos. I also keep a journal which helps a lot with my mental health. Music is also a really important thing to me and makes me happy.” I think if you keep a journal that’s a great way to write down your thoughts, clear your mind. I then asked her, why is self-care important to you? She said, “Self-care is important to me in many ways, one being a way to calm down and take care of myself. Another is if I’m in a good place I can focus more on my friends and family.”

Self-care is so important whether it’s to read, exercise, or even write in a journal. If you want to have good self-care, then you have to get rid of all those negative thoughts by replacing them with positive ones.
