Spring Sports Current Status

Spring Sports Current Status

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started a lot of things have been postponed or even cancelled. In that list of many cancellations and postponements includes spring sports. According to the OHSAA, Ohio High School Athletic Association, the start of spring sports such as softball, lacrosse, baseball, track and field, and boys tennis are still postponed. This coincides with schools not being open. OHSAA also announced Thursday that the winter sports tournaments of wrestling, basketball, and ice hockey have been canceled. Initially, the tournaments were postponed indefinitely on March 12, but are now canceled. Governor Mike DeWine is asking all Ohioans to do everything they can to stop the spread of this virus. That request, along with our schools not being able to reopen for weeks, means that school sports cannot happen at this time. Even if our schools reopen this spring, it will be difficult to find facilities willing to host the tournaments. The association and schools in the area are playing it by ear and waiting for the next steps on what to do next.

This is affecting athletes in all different aspects. Not only are they missing out on the spring season, but the seniors are missing their last and final season. They will be missing the experience and memories that go along with senior year. And even bigger, these athletes could possibly be missing out on breaking school records and missing out on college scholarships. Their opportunities are getting taken out from under them and there is nothing they can do. We all just have to wait for this to be over and hope it ends quickly.
