Expensive: The True Homecoming Theme

Expensive: The True Homecoming Theme

Homecoming is an over glamorized night to hang with friends. I do not see anything wrong with homecoming, although the negative is the money spent on this one evening. Girls will spend a ton of money on their dress, hair, nails, and shoes, and boys pick up the tab on dinner, pictures, and tickets. So why do us girls blow our paychecks or parents’ money on one night? It’s not just who can look the best; it’s who spends the most.

There is a price to the madness of looking “the best”.  In a recent poll taken at our school, girls have said they spend $350 on homecoming alone. If you want the works, then you will be paying $35 or more for your nails and at least $40 to get your hair done.  Spending more than $150 on a Homecoming dress might come with the label of “trying too hard” or in this case “spending too much”.  Homecoming is supposed to be a night to just have fun with your friends and, personally, I can have just as much fun in a thrift dress as I could in a Windsor dress; but maybe some girls need a $200 boost of confidence to guarantee a good night.

As we pass around numbers that girls spend, do we ever take into account the price boys pay?  Well there is $50 for a shirt and tie, and $15 for a corsage. Assuming he is a gentleman, he will spend around $30-$45 on dinner.  That total is around $120, including pictures.  Why does a guy spend so much on his date? Maybe he believes it can woo her for after homecoming or there is the possibility that he just wants to offer his date the best.

Can money really guarantee a happy homecoming? Think about it, you can get a lot of food at T-Bell for about $7-$15 (less than half you’d spend at a fancy restaurant) and you can wear clothes you already have. That makes homecoming ten times cheaper, but will you just be getting what you pay for?  Maybe the glamour is what makes it fun… even though when some people get on the dance floor, the glamour goes out the window. ATTENTION GIRLS! You can look good in a $50 dress and still have fun. And boys, if you have a good date, she will not expect you to spend a fortune just to have fun.
