Cardi B On The Rise – Music Review

Just one year ago, in February of 2017, Belcalis Almanzar, professionally known as Cardi B, signed her first major label record deal. Shortly after, her debut single titled “Bodak Yellow” reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart. American rapper, singer, songwriter and media personality became an internet celebrity through her Instagram and social media. She first appeared as a regular cast member on the VH1 reality television series Love & Hip Hop: New York from 2015-2017. But 2017 was her breakthrough year, becoming the first woman to have five top 10 singles simultaneously on the Billboard Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Chart.

Cardi B was born and raised in The Bronx, New York, to a Trinidadian mother and Dominican father. Growing up, she claims to have been a gang member of the Bloods since age 16. She started to gain publicity on social media due to several of her videos going viral.

Cardi B made her musical debut in 2015 on Shaggy’s remix to his single “Boom Boom”. After releasing a few mixtapes and features on different projects, she signed her first record deal at the beginning of 2017. By May, it was revealed that Cardi B was nominated for the Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for the BET awards. She then performed at the BET Awards After Party Show. She also received two nominations at the 60th Grammy Awards: Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.

In July, Cardi B was put on the cover of The Faders Summer Music Issue and performed her top hit “Bodak Yellow” on the Wendy Williams Show. By September, “Bodak Yellow” claimed the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart and number one on Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Songs for three consecutive weeks. It was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. She became the first female rapper to land her first three entries, with collaborations “No Limit” and “Motorsport” in the top 10 of the top 100, and R&B Hip-Hop Songs Chart.
