Climate Change

Climate+Change

Everyone has been noticing the weird weather that has been going on lately. There has been many disasters and severe weather spreading all across America and it has people looking for answers. Many people believe that this is because of climate change. Climate change is “a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.”

According to NASA’s website, the earth’s climate has changed a lot throughout history. In the last 650,000 years, there has been about seven cycles of “Ice Ages” and the last one happened about 7,000 years ago, and after that was the beginning of human life. This means that we are not due for another drastic change for a long time, and yet many weather events are leading people to believe that there is. There is a 95% chance that this is caused by human life, as of 1950, the carbon dioxide in our atmosphere has been higher than it has been in the history of earth. This is causing the glaciers to start shrinking, ice in lakes and rivers are breaking up earlier and earlier in the year, trees are flowering sooner than they should, and plants and animals behaviors are shifting. Other effects that climate change causes is hurricanes to become more intense. The frequency of category 4 or 5 storms have increased a lot since 1980. It is uncertain whether human influence has caused this, but with the planet becoming warmer it is projected to increase. This is a good explanation for the disasters that hurricanes Irma, Harvey, and Jose, have caused in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

In the North East region of the United States, which is where Ohio is, there are already signs that climate change is effecting our weather. There have been heat waves in the fall and heavy downpours that cause flooding. Infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries and ecosystems are affected by this. Many states and cities in our area are starting to include climate change into their planning for the future. In other parts of the country they are having droughts and wildfires because of the heat, which is destroying their ecosystem. Obviously, climate change is a very big issue that people should be taking seriously. There are large amounts of proof that shows that this is something everyone should realize is a big deal.
