Should we send more service members into Afghanistan?

September 11, 2001, our nation was attacked. Two airplanes slammed into the twin towers. The airplanes were hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists and the attacks lead to the collapse of both twin towers. On this day, the pentagon was also attacked by Al Qaeda terrorists and another plane which was believed to be heading towards the White House was brought down by the passengers of the plane.

Since this day on September 11, 2001, President George Bush declared the war on terror. At this time we invaded Afghanistan in order to fight the Taliban and other terrorist groups in the country. The war in Afghanistan has been going on for 16 years now, making it the longest war in American History.

However it is now 2017 and the situation in Afghanistan is still far from being stable. Here the question arises on whether or not we should send more troops to Afghanistan. As of right now we have currently 15,000 troops in Afghanistan after Donald Trump authorized 3,800 more military personnel to enter the country. Is this action necessary?

Many people want to bring all our troops back home and to focus more on spending on America. They feel that we have no reason to be in Afghanistan. However, on the other side, some feel that if we pull out of Afghanistan now, it would be a win for the Taliban and other terrorist groups. They believe that if we were to completely pull out, the past 16 years would have been one big waste and all those who have died serving would have died without a cause.

I personally believe that we should send more troops into Afghanistan. I believe we should send an overwhelming amount of troops over there to completely eradicate Islamic terrorism. After this is accomplished and Afghanistan is stabilized, they can create their own government, allowing us to then pull our troops back. Otherwise, if we were to pull out now we would be making the past 16 years a waste of time and money. The Taliban and other terrorist groups would be able to grow larger and make Afghanistan their refuge country once again.
