Mrs. Wallace has introduced a new style of classroom this year. Instead of the traditional rows of desks, she has couches and reclining chairs. She decided to do this during the summer. Her intentions were to add a new fun environment for the students. She told me that the students have responded positively.

Mrs. Wallace refers to this as flexible seating. She feels that if students have a choice to sit where they want, then they will feel more comfortable. When a substitute teacher is here, the kids have a “home base” that they go to so the substitute teacher can take attendance. For the kids who cannot learn while sitting on a couch, she also has desks. Mrs. Wallace feels that if a teacher is going to use this type of setting, then she/he has to be very flexible. The new classroom has made a positive impact in her eyes and makes school more enjoyable for everyone.
