Spring Musical Preview: Once Upon a Mattress

The spring musical is coming up again, and this year it is Mary Rodgers and Marshall Barer’s Once Upon a Mattress, directed by Nathan Kuhns, Tiffany Leyman, and Matt Malloy. The musical delves deeper into the story of The Princess and the Pea, giving more detail than previously heard in one’s childhood.
Narrated by a lovely minstrel (Leah Emmerling), the story focuses on a small kingdom run by the mute King Sextimus (Chris Dantona) and the pushy Queen Aggravain (Aliyah Leyman), who has enacted a law that forbids anyone to marry until their son, Prince Dauntless (James Vaughn), marries. The Queen has gone through 12 princesses in her quest to find a suitable bride for her son, so far without luck. Meanwhile, one of Queen Aggravain’s ladies in waiting, Lady Larken (Skylar Wiggers), shares some important news with the knight Sir Harry (Spencer Crosser) that could change her life. The minstrel, King Sextimus, and the Jester (Hannah Bosel) all agree that something must be done about the marriage situation. Enter Princess Winnifred (Kaitlyn Gorby), an unorthodox princess from the swamps who could very well be the last chance for anyone to get married.
Why is the King mute? Will Prince Dauntless ever get married? Will Princess Winnifred be the wife for Prince Dauntless? To find this out, and more, come to the DAHS auditorium the weekend of April 17th. The shows are on Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 18th at 7pm, and there is a matinee on Sunday, April 19th at 2pm. Tickets are $8 at the door for general admission, and $5 for seniors and students. Come by and see a great show!
