Junior Austin Rutecki Scores his 1000th Point

On February 13, 2015 junior Austin Rutecki scored his 1000th point in the game against East Palestine. Going into the game, he only needed 13 more points to reach his goal; by the second quarter, he needed 4 more points. The student section was chanting “four more!” in support.

At the next possession, he made a three-pointer! The student section was going crazy; they started chanting “one more!”. He then got fouled while shooting and was heading to the line to shoot two shots. He only needed one more point for his record.

Austin told the Morning Journal after the game that he did not know he was one point away because he blocks out the crowd during the game. He then realized right before his foul shot when one of his teammates told him he only needed one more point. As he was shooting the foul shot, his teammate Josh Craig was holding up one finger to show that he needed one more and his other teammate Josh Liberati was smiling because he knew it was going in.

Austin made the first foul shot and the crowd went crazy. His teammates jumped on him and huddled around him congratulating him. He scored his 1000th point and it was only the second quarter with over three minutes remaining. The student section made signs to hold up because they knew he would reach his goal. He already broke a record by being the only junior at Lisbon to score 1000 points. He has a chance to break the all-time scoring record. He ended up with 20 points that game and received the game ball. Many people refer to the foul shot he made as “The Shot”. Congratulations to Austin Rutecki for his basketball success!
