Veterans Day Assembly

Veterans+Day+Assembly

On Tuesday, November 11th, Lisbon DAHS celebrated Veterans Day with an all-school assembly in the auditorium. Many area veterans were honored in the program and we also had three special guests. Hank Allenbaugh, a Korean War veteran, answered questions asked by Mr. Burnell’s history class. He spoke of being drafted for war and the difficulties of leaving his family. Bill Edgerton, a veteran of the Cold War, had a few words to share with the student body. He told us what it was like serving during the Cold War and how much it meant to him to be included in our assembly. Our last guest, Roy Guthrie, is a veteran of World War II. Though he did not speak, his story tells it all; Guthrie served under Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley and George Patton. He fought in four major battles and  is a two-time cancer survivor. Mr. Guthrie is 91 years young!

In addition to our special guests, members of the AMVETS Post 45 in Salem did the presentation of colors. Mr. Edenfield gave an introduction and also read President Obama’s Veterans Day Proclamation. Four heartfelt videos were played as a tribute to the veterans, and then the high school choir sang a medley of military anthems, as well as a few other patriotic songs. They ended the program with the Battle Hymn of the Republic and the Blue Pride Band played God Bless the USA .

All in all, this was another successful Veterans Day assembly that the students and teachers enjoyed.
