The last time Lisbon defeated Springfield in a varsity basketball game, a gallon of gas was 35 cents, Nixon was president, and there was no such thing as Star Wars or Grease. Let’s skip ahead 44 years, to a game that will be talked about for the next decade.
The Lisbon Blue Devils defeated the Springfield Tigers 52-50 in an unforgettable match-up that came down to the final seconds. Capitalizing late, after being down by 12 in the 3rd quarter, the Blue Devils came back for the win and pulled even with Springfield for first place in the ITCL. Austin Rutecki received Player of the Game after a terrific performance which included 19 points and 8 rebounds.
The game was televised on WKBN’s “Game of the Week.” Students and faculty at David Anderson made sure to have their voices heard, delivering in numbers that could give anyone that attended chills. Once the final buzzer sounded, students stormed to center court, congratulating the team on one of the biggest wins in the school’s recent memory.
So what is next for the Lisbon Blue Devil basketball team? Well, as a student and huge fan, I believe this is the start of a new era. This is only the beginning, embrace every second and show your support as much as you can. We are among something incredible.
